The Lemon Verbena (Aloysia citrodora) is a species of the Verbenaceae family, native to South America (Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, Bolivia, and Peru). It was introduced in Europe by the Spanish and Portuguese in the 17th century. In the Algarve, it is called "beautiful luísa" and in other parts of Portugal it has the common name of "limonete".

Some parts of this plant were used to perfume clothes and in hot baths as essential oils for the body. It was later explored and taken to the European continent by Spaniards from South America.

It can be considered a nervous system relaxant, acting on migraines, nervousness, agitation, and insomnia. In addition, it can stimulate appetite and have an antispasmodic action on the digestive system. It can also help relieve gastrointestinal or menstrual cramps, even as the feeling of vomiting. It can also promote good digestion and strengthen the immune system.
