The benefits of artichoke tea (and how to make it)

The artichoke is a plant rich in history, versatility and medicinal properties. These captivating flowers, known botanically as Cynara scolymus, have held a special place in Mediterranean cuisine and traditional medicine for centuries.

In this article, we share our knowledge of this plant, in particular the lesser-known but equally valuable artichoke tea. An unpretentious drink prepared from the leaves of the artichoke plant, it is gaining popularity due to its potential health benefits.

What are artichokes?

Artichokes are large, thistle-like vegetables with a pointed exterior and a fleshy heart. They are native to the Mediterranean region.

The artichoke has a long and rich history, with evidence of its cultivation dating back to ancient Egypt. Although today they are best known as a culinary delight, the Greek and Roman civilisations were already aware of their medicinal properties in ancient times.

They are a good source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, and are thought to support liver health, promote digestion and reduce cholesterol levels.

Benefits of Artichoke Tea

Artichoke tea has gained popularity in recent years due to its growing reputation as a natural herbal remedy. It is increasingly being used to support liver health, promote digestive health and manage cholesterol levels.

  • Supporting liver health: Artichokes contain cynarin, a compound that can help protect the liver and promote detoxification.
  • Promoting digestive health: Artichokes contain antioxidants and other compounds that can help improve digestion and reduce digestive symptoms such as bloating and gas.
  • Reducing cholesterol levels: Artichoke leaf extract has been shown to help reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol levels in some studies.

How to prepare artichoke tea

There are several different ways to prepare artichoke tea. A simple method is to soak dried artichoke leaves in hot water for 5 minutes. Do not infuse for more than 10 minutes. Although fresh leaves can also be used, dried leaves are more easily preserved.

You can add honey or sweetener to taste, or even incorporate artichoke tea into other drinks, such as iced tea or kombucha.

We recommend drinking 2-3 cups a day. To stimulate digestive health and metabolism, it’s ideal to drink a cup in the morning.

Give it a try!
