What is Valerian?
Valerian or Valeriana officinalis is a plant with calming potential also known as common valerian, cat's valerian, garden valerian and garden heliotrope. In the classical era, it is said to have been used as an aromatic ingredient in perfumes or baths. Interestingly, Valeriana officinalis may have existed since 460 BC and today, probably, have 270 species. The origin of the word “Valeriana” comes from the Latin “valere” (strength, health, and tranquillity), related to its contribution to a good quality of life.
Although cultivated in many European countries, Valerian is common in North Asia, North America and Brazil. Valeriana officinalis in its natural state is a favourite plant of hundreds of moths, flies, and butterflies. It also stimulates cats, improving their well-being. Unlike humans, cats appreciate the smell of Valerian, whether dried or natural. Hence, the name cat's valerian.
Valerian Root is used in cooking to flavour fresh drinks and salads.
