The Lemon Verbena (Aloysia citrodora) is a species of the Verbenaceae family, native to South America (Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, Bolivia, and Peru). It was introduced in Europe by the Spanish and Portuguese in the 17th century. In the Algarve, it is called "beautiful luísa" and in other parts of Portugal it has the common name of "limonete".

Origin: Paraguay

During the reign of Queen Victoria of England, Lemon Verbena was grown in English gardens to use in creating natural scents and fragrances. As for its flavoring function, Lemon Verbena was believed to help purify the air inside the house. Some parts of this plant were used to perfume clothes and in hot baths as essential oils for the body. It was later explored and taken to the European continent by Spaniards from South America.

Properties: Lemon Verbena is known for its carminative and digestive properties that reduce the development of intestinal gas. It can be considered a nervous system relaxant, acting on migraines, nervousness, agitation, and insomnia. In addition, it can stimulate appetite and have an antispasmodic action on the digestive system. It can also help relieve gastrointestinal or menstrual cramps, even as the feeling of vomiting. It can also promote good digestion and strengthen the immune system.

The Lemon Verbena Tea can help in the slim process of reduction of cellulite, fever, and blood pressure. It can be an excellent ally in the fight against urinary infections and bad breath and can be used as an insect repellent, even as a flavoring in cold drinks.
