Japanese Tradition
The tea ceremony, or chanoyu in Japanese, is a traditional aesthetic practice that involves the preparation and appreciation of matcha tea. It’s much more than a simple ritual — it is a refined art form. Practitioners must have deep knowledge of traditional arts, architecture, landscape gardening, flower arrangement, tea cultivation, traditional clothing (kimono), calligraphy, ceramics, etiquette, and the use of incense. This study is ongoing and can last for years, with each ceremony sometimes lasting up to four hours.
One of the most important utensils is the chawan, a porcelain bowl used for preparing and enjoying matcha. Treasured through generations, it’s often passed down as a family heirloom, symbolising continuity and tradition in chanoyu.
When choosing your chawan, look for rounded edges, a smooth interior, and a flat base — features that make tea preparation easier. For the best results, we recommend using a chashaku (bamboo scoop) to measure the powder and a chasen (bamboo whisk) to mix, creating a smooth and flavourful tea with all its benefits.
Why Choose This Chawan?
Ideal Shape: Rounded rim and polished interior make it easier to use the chasen.
Design: Soft pink print that conveys harmony and gentleness.
Artisan Touch: Each piece is slightly unique, reflecting the authenticity of Japanese ceramic tradition.
Usage Tip:
To prepare your matcha to perfection, use a chashaku to scoop the tea powder and a chasen to whisk it with hot water (between 80–90 °C). The smooth texture and wide shape of the bowl help create a creamy, even foam.
