The tradition of tea in Japan:

In Japan, the tea ceremony, known as Chanoyu or Chado (the ‘Way of Tea’), is more than just a simple preparation of the drink. It is an art that reflects harmony, respect, purity and tranquillity, principles of Zen philosophy. The ‘way of tea’ tradition represents the essence of the Japanese concept of omotenashi - a way of welcoming guests with care and appreciation.

How do I store tea at home?

In order to store tea correctly, you need to pay attention to a few essential aspects for preserving any type of tea. The first thing to look out for is the choice of storage containers for teas and infusions. Airtight metal tins or porcelain jars are the most suitable for storing tea in your kitchen or pantry. Between these two options, airtight tins are the best choice because they promote the long-term preservation of the tea's properties. This choice is based on the presence of an airtight lid that prevents oxygen from accumulating inside the tin.

The factors that most affect the quality of the tea or infusion are storage, temperature and composition. When it comes to storage, it's important to protect your tea or infusion, whether in sachets or loose, from heat, humidity and direct sunlight. This serves as a guarantee of the quality of the tea's properties. Favour opaque or dark-coloured airtight tins on high shelves away from strong flavours such as coffee or spices. Avoid placing your tins of tea near heat sources such as extractor fans. Don't store tea in plastic containers.

When it's time to change the tea or infusion, wash the tea tin with lukewarm water and neutral dishwashing detergent. Then wipe with a dry cloth and leave to dry naturally for 2 to 3 hours. To remove possible odours from the tin, you can rub a few (natural) lemon peels on it and rinse again with water.
