What is Black Tea

Black tea is one of the five members of the beautiful Camellia sinensis family that we love so much. Although less popular than Green Tea, Black Tea is also highly beneficial to our health, including our hearts. It is the tea option that contains the highest quantity of theine, but it has the least antioxidants compared to the other teas in the family.

According to tea lovers, the difference between Green Tea and Black Tea lies in the respective processing leaves. In Black Tea, the production process is divided into six stages: harvesting, draining, rotating, oxidizing, drying, and sorting. This tea results from the harvesting of the oldest shoots and leaves of Camellia sinensis, which are then rolled (by hand or by machines), exposed to air (oxidation), and dried. The leaves take between 12 and 20 hours to wither. The first difference between the two teas is the fermentation.

Green Tea leaves are steamed fresh and air-dried, while Black Tea leaves need to be heated (fermented) in closed tanks and then air-dried. Due to fermentation, the buds and leaves that make Black Tea lose their antioxidant potential, but they obtain a higher degree of theine compared to Green Tea. This is where the intense smoky flavour of Black Tea comes from.

When the Black Tea leaves are oxidized they have a dark reddish colour and when dried they are brown or black.

Benefits of Black Tea

Black tea has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that are beneficial for the treatment of various health problems. In addition to helping control blood sugar levels, it speeds up metabolism, improves concentration, and boosts defenses. But does Black Tea lose weight? Due to its diuretic potential, Black Tea is an excellent ally in eliminating fluid retention that causes a feeling of slimming. This false idea is the result of belly deflation and not, properly, the loss of body fat.

Although Black Tea has a high theine content, it does not increase blood pressure. Black Tea is recommended for treating diarrhea and reducing feelings of fatigue. Because it contains theine, it is not recommended to take it during the night so as not to interfere with sleep. In addition, prefer to drink it between meals, hot or cold, to promote the nutritional absorption of the food you have consumed.
