Icelandic Lichen was used as both food and medicine during periods of food scarcity in Nordic countries. Its medicinal use dates back over 1,000 years and is mentioned in ancient Icelandic medical manuscripts.
Today, it continues to be highly valued and is often included in the composition of cough syrups.
