Laurel — The laurel is a tree from the Lauraceae family originating in Asia Minor and the Mediterranean Region. In Portugal, laurel leaves are part of the Portuguese gastronomic culture. However, they are also used worldwide as a traditional seasoning in soups, sauces, and broths with beans or lentils. In addition, bay leaf with onions is essential to prepare delicious meat dishes. In national territory, the laurel grows well in areas with a mild climate where sun exposure predominates. This evergreen tree is recognized for its dark green colour that remains unchanged throughout the year.

The leaves and fruits of the laurel tree are the only parts used for medicinal purposes. In addition to its aromatic potential, bay leaf tea can be an ally for stomach well-being. If you want to prevent gastric discomfort, you can consume bay leaf tea after the main meals. In the Christian religion, laurel leaves symbolize immortality because they always have the same colour over time. The use of laurel leaves and fruits is quite old. From the famous crowns of victors in Greco-Roman antiquity to the wreaths of university students in the Middle Ages.

Therapeutic indications — Laurel leaf tea may help reduce gastrointestinal gas, relieve menstrual cramps and increase appetite. Infused bay leaves can also promote immunity boosting, diabetes control and muscle strengthening. Generally, bay leaves are recognized for their anti-inflammatory, diuretic, digestive and analgesic properties. In aromatherapy, they may contribute to the balance of the nervous system and the improvement of respiratory functions.

Water temperature: 100º

Infusion time: 10 minutes

Recommended quantity: 3 to 4 cups daily, during or after main meals.

Preparation: Place 5 to 10 bay leaves in a container with one litter (1 L) of boiled water. Then cover it and let it infuse for 10 minutes. Finally, remove the leaves, let it cool down a bit, and you can consume it immediately. If you want to add flavour, you can add some apple slices while the infusion is still hot.

Store in a dry (max. 20º) and cool (max. 60% humidity) place.
